Overview
The HygroVue™5 Temperature and Relative Humidity Sensor is designed for general meteorological and environmental monitoring applications. It uses the SDI-12 communications protocol to communicate with any SDI-12 recorder, simplifying installation and programming. The sensing element is easily changed in the field, reducing downtime and calibration costs. It is the entry-level sensor in the HygroVue™ line of relative humidity and temperature sensors.
Key Advantages
Technical Description
The HygroVue 5 sensor has a user-replaceable chip element that incorporates both a temperature sensor and an RH sensor. Each element is individually calibrated with the calibration corrections stored on the chip.
Electronics within the HygroVue 5 control the measurement made by the sensor element, apply temperature and linearization corrections to the readings, and present the data via SDI-12 to a data logger.
A stainless-steel mesh filter minimizes the effects of dust and dirt on the sensor, while allowing air exchange around the sensor element and reducing the chance that condensation remains inside the filter cap. A small PTFE membrane filter is bonded to the surface of the element, which prevents any finer dust or mold from directly influencing the measurement.
The sensor housing is designed to withstand permanent exposure to all weather. It fits into a range of radiation shields, including compact shields such as the RAD06 6-Plate Solar Radiation Shield.
For improved reliability, the sensor is factory fitted with a fixed length of cable, and the sensor body is then potted to completely seal the electronics and cable joint. A range of cable lengths is available.

Common Accessories
(4)RAD06
6-Plate Solar Radiation Shield
One RAD06 is needed per HygroVue 5. The RAD06 uses a double-louvered design that offers improved sensor protection from driving rain, snow, and insect intrusion. It also has lower self-heating in bright sunlight combined with higher temperatures (> 24°C (~75°F)) and low wind speeds (< 2m/s (~4.5 mph)), providing a better measurement.
OrderableTS100SS
Aspirated Radiation Shield
The TS100SS is a fan-aspirated radiation shield that minimizes temperature-measurement errors caused by incident solar radiation. The unique aerodynamic shape and rugged, low-power fan make it the first research-grade fan-aspirated shield that is practical for use on battery- or solar-powered stations. The shield provides excellent sensor protection and accommodates various combinations of thermistors, PRTs, and humidity sensors using one of the sensor port adapter plugs.
Orderable39119
DIN Rail Terminal Kit with 2 Terminals and 4 Wires
The 39119 provides the needed DIN rail terminals, separator, and wires to connect any product to a data logger or other peripheral that requires four wires for connection. This kit provides the following wires: black, brown, white, and clear. The color-coding of these wires matches the wire coloring of the product for ease in connection, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Orderable39642
SDI-12 DIN Rail Terminal Bus Kit without Mounting Bracket
The 39642 makes it easier for you to connect wires from multiple SDI-12 sensors into one set of terminals on a data logger. The 39642 uses six DIN-rail mountable (pn 27479), 6-wire terminal blocks. The 39642 is a jumper that electrically connects two terminal blocks together at a time (pn 32918). This setup allows up to 11 SDI-12 sensors to be connected to one set of terminals on a data logger.
