Overview
The CRVW3 is a self-contained, low-cost, three-channel vibrating wire node. It is designed to be an independent data-acquisition system, or a component of your larger radio-linked data-acquisition network when it is configured with available wireless communications options. The CRVW3 includes a factory-integrated power supply and a weatherproof enclosure.
Learn about our patented VSPECT™ spectral-analysis technology at our VSPECT Essentials web resource.
The dynamic vibrating wire measurement technique is protected under U.S. Patent No. 8,671,758, and the vibrating wire spectral-analysis technology (VSPECT) is protected under U.S. Patent No. 7,779,690.
Key Advantages
Capable of measuring up to three vibrating wire sensors using Campbell Scientific’s patented VSPECT™ technology
Technical Description
The CRVW3 Vibrating Wire Node uses vibrating wire spectral-analysis technology (VSPECT) to provide the best measurement possible for vibrating wire sensors. VSPECT observes the incoming sensor signal, performs a Fourier transform and a spectral analysis (transforming the time series into individual sinusoidal components in the frequency spectrum), and determines the sensor frequency by identifying the strongest signal in the acceptable range while filtering out environmental and electrical noise.
The CRVW3 provides the following data: the resonant sensor frequency, thermistor resistance for temperature calculation, and diagnostic values to help determine the validity of the frequency measurement.
Note: The CRVW3 requires Device Configuration Utility (DevConfig) v 2.10 or later. When radio options are used, the CRVW3 requires LoggerNet v 4.3 or later.

Orderable15731
900 MHz 0 dBd 1/4 Wave Omnidirectional Antenna with RPSMA Connector
The 15731 is a unity gain (0 dBd), straight, omnidirectional antenna that attaches directly to the bottom of the CRVW3 (antenna cable not required).
Limited availability14204
900 MHz 0 dBd 1/2 Wave Omnidirectional Antenna with RPSMA Connector
The 14204 is a 0 dBd gain 1/2 wave antenna with an RPSMA (reverse polarity SMA) connector and articulating base. It is designed for use with radios operating at 900 to 930 MHz. It is typically used with one of our 900 MHz radio products with an RPSMA antenna jack, such as the RF401A. This small, low-cost antenna is typically used in applications where space is constrained and antenna gain is not required to maintain a strong RF link.
Orderable14205
900 MHz 6 dBd Yagi Antenna with Mounting Hardware
Used outdoors, this high-gain (6 dBd), directional (Yagi) antenna has a narrow beam width that requires precise aiming. Its higher gain makes it useful for communicating over longer distances.
Orderable14221
900 MHz 3 dBd Omnidirectional Antenna with Mounting Hardware
The 14221 has the highest gain (3 dBd) of our omnidirectional antennas. It is suitable for a repeater CRVW3 station where you need to communicate with multiple stations located in different directions. Its rugged FM2 antenna mounts will accommodate a vertical pipe with an outside diameter of up to 6.5 cm (2.5 in.). The antenna has a Type N female connector and requires an antenna cable to connect it to the radio.
OrderableCOAXRPSMA
LMR195 Antenna Cable with Reverse Polarity SMA and Type N Pin (Male) Connector
Either this cable or the COAXNTN is required when using the 14201 or 14221 antennas. The COAXRPSMA is an LMR 195 cable that terminates in a Type N pin (male) connector on the antenna end and a Reverse Polarity SMA (RPSMA) pin (male) connector on the transceiver end. It is recommended for applications where the cable length is less than 10 feet. Shrink tape (pn 21212) is recommended to protect external antenna connections when antenna cables and larger antennas are used.
OrderableCOAXNTN
RG8 Antenna Cable with 2 Type N Pin (Male) Connectors
Either this cable or the COAXRPSMA is required when using the 14201 or 14221 antennas. The COAXNTN is a low-loss RG8 coaxial cable that requires the 14462 surge suppressor to connect it to the CRVW3. The COAXNTN/14462 combination is recommended over the COAXRPSMA when the antenna cable is longer than 10 feet (as measured between the transceiver and the antenna) or when the CRVW3 is used in an environment susceptible to lightning or electrostatic buildup. Shrink tape (pn 21212) is recommended to protect external antenna connections when antenna cables and larger antennas are used.
Orderable31314
Surge Protection Kit, Type N to RPSMA, 700 to 2700 MHz
The 31314 is an RF surge protection kit with flange mounting bracket. It may be flange-mounted to an enclosure backplate or bulkhead-mounted through an enclosure wall. One side of the surge protector connects to a radio with an RPSMA antenna connection. The other side connects to an antenna/antenna coaxial cable with Type N connector.
Orderable21212
Black Cold Shrink Tape
This 10 ft roll of 1 in. wide black self-vulcanizing tape can help protect the connection of outdoor antennas. After connecting the coaxial cable to the antenna, wrap the tape around the connectors that are exposed to the environment.
Orderable31163
Basic Grounding Kit for Small Enclosure
This kit consists of a ground rod and components to connect the data logger enclosure to the ground rod. An adequate ground is required to provide a basic level of protection from electrical surges. Campbell Scientific recommends proper grounding of the CRVW3 as a good standard of practice.
Orderable39177

Compatibility
Sensors
The CRVW3 Vibrating Wire Node is capable of measuring the most common vibrating wire sensors including, but not limited to, strain gages, piezometers, pressure transducers, tiltmeters, crackmeters, and load cells. The CRVW3 has three sensor inputs; each sensor input includes a vibrating wire sensor connection and a thermistor connection. The channels are easily configured for traditional sensors. Individual channels can be adjusted to read only the vibrating wire sensor, or they may be turned off completely.
Network Considerations
The CRVW3 can be ordered with several wireless communications options. The following table illustrates wireless communications compatibilities in terms of networks.

Enclosure Considerations
The CRVW3 comes in a package designed for field deployment. The electronics, battery, and electrical connections are all contained within the enclosure. The CRVW3 is supplied with a basic mounting kit, or a metal universal mounting bracket can be added to facilitate installation on a post or wall.
Power Considerations
The CRVW3 can be ordered with either a rechargeable battery or a D-cell alkaline battery pack. When the rechargeable battery is used, the CRVW3 can be easily wired to a solar panel, and the rechargeable battery will be charged using the built-in regulator on the CRVW3.
