How We Can Help You

Agricultural Research and Networks

Soil water content (SWC), soil water potential (SWP), temperature, and electrical conductivity measurements give researchers, land managers, hydrologists, engineers, and others the insights they need to make confident soil management decisions.

Irrigation Scheduling and Management

Together, SWC and SWP give the most complete picture of plant‑available water. Automate measurements to support scheduling decisions that prevent over- or under-watering.

Environmental and Ecological Research

Our best-in-class time domain reflectometry (TDR) and complex dielectric through intersection (CDX) soil sensors set the standard for research objectives.

Watershed and Water Resource Studies

Whether your soil is droughted, flooded, or somewhere in between, Campbell Scientific sensors monitor soil moisture at depth and quantify recharge across complex terrain. Seamlessly scale from individual monitoring points to multi-site networks with centralized data management.

Featured Products

SoilVue™10 TDR Soil Moisture and Temperature Profile Sensor

SoilVue™10 TDR Soil Moisture and Temperature Profile Sensor

Reduce installation time and soil disturbances with the SoilVue 10. This innovative TDR soil sensor provides excellent soil contact and enables soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and temperature profiles at six or nine depths, depending on the selected option.

TempVue™50 SDI-12 Digital Water Temperature Sensor

TempVue™50 SDI-12 Digital Water Temperature Sensor

This rugged, reliable soil and water temperature sensor offers an SDI-12 output and advanced stability in nearly all monitoring conditions.

CS655 12 cm Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor

CS655 12 cm Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor

This versatile sensor measures volumetric water content (VWC), bulk electrical conductivity, and temperature using two 12 cm stainless-steel rods.

CS650 30 cm Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor

CS650 30 cm Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor

Similar to the CS655, the CS650 monitors VWC, bulk electrical conductivity, and temperature. The CS650 uses two 30 cm stainless-steel rods.

HS2 and HS2P Handheld Soil-Water Probes

HS2 and HS2P Handheld Soil-Water Probes

The HS2 and HS2P are portable, handheld soil-water probes. The HS2P includes an insertion pole for easier use.

229 Heat Dissipation Matric Potential Sensor

229 Heat Dissipation Matric Potential Sensor

Requiring no maintenance and unimpacted by salts in soil, the 229 reliably monitors SWP and is ideal for long-term installations.

Measurement Fundamentals

Soil Water Content Versus Soil Water Potential: Why Both Matter

Soil Water Content (SWC) tells you how much water is present in a volume of soil. Soil Water Potential (SWP) tells you the energy state of water in the soil, which provides insights into water movement in soil profiles that drive water processes.

A soil sample at field capacity and droughted soil may only differ modestly in water content but differ dramatically in water potential. SWC and SWP are related, but distinct measurements. In many applications, you need both measurements for a comprehensive understanding of soil condition.
