Overview

The 41003-5, manufactured by R. M. Young, is a naturally aspirated 10-plate radiation shield. Its louvered construction allows air to pass freely through the shield, keeping the probe at or near ambient temperature. The shield's white color reflects solar radiation.

Detailed Description

The 41003-5 10-Plate Solar Radiation Shield houses the HC2S3 or EE181-L Temperature and RH probe.

The 41003-5 can also house a 43347, 107, 108, 109, or HMP60 probe. The HMP45C and several other retired sensors are also compatible. Refer to the Compatibility section for the hardware required to mount the above sensors in the shield.

The 41003-5 includes a 2 in. U-bolt with a plastic v-block. The U-bolt is placed in the holes on the side of the bracket for attachment to a mast or vertical pole. The U-bolt is placed in the holes on the bottom of the bracket for attachment to a crossarm.

The 41003-5 10-plate Radiation Shield replaced the 41002 12-Plate Gill Radiation Shield in June of 2005. The biggest improvement of the 41003-5 is that it can be mounted to either a vertical pole or horizontal pipe. The retired 41002 only mounted to a vertical pole.

Compatibility

Note: The following shows notable compatibility information. It is not a comprehensive list of all compatible or incompatible products.

Sensors

Product Compatible Note
107 The 41322 adapter is required to install a 107 probe.
108 The 41322 adapter is required to install a 108 probe.
109 The 41322 adapter is required to install a 109 probe.
43347-L The 27251 hex plug is required to secure the 43347 RTD into the radiation shield's base.
CS215-L (retired)
CS500-L (retired) For the CS500, the 41322 adapter can be used to mount the sensor in the lower part of the shield. Alternatively, a 41381 extension tube and the 6637 hex plug can be used to mount the CS500 in a higher part of the shield; this configuration also requires the #18278 cable.
EE181-L The 15823 hex plug is required to mount the EE181-L in the 41003-5.
HC2S3-L (retired) The 27731 hex plug is required to mount the HC2S3 in the 41003-5.
HMP155A-L
HMP35A (retired) The 15823 hex plug is required to mount an HMP35A in the 41003-5. At one time, this hex plug was shipped with the radiation shield but it no longer is.
HMP35C-L (retired) The 15823 hex plug is required to mount an HMP35C in the 41003-5. At one time, this hex plug was shipped with the radiation shield but it no longer is.
HMP45C-L (retired) The 15823 hex plug is required to mount an HMP45C in the 41003-5. At one time, this hex plug was shipped with the radiation shield but it no longer is.
HMP50-L (retired) For the HMP50, the 41322 adapter can be used to mount the sensor in the lower part of the shield. Alternatively, a 41381 extension tube and the 6637 hex plug can be used to mount the HMP50 in a higher part of the shield; this configuration also requires the #18278 cable.
HMP60-L For the HMP60, the 41322 adapter can be used to mount the sensor in the lower part of the shield. Alternatively, a 41381 extension tube and the 6637 hex plug can be used to mount the HMP60 in a higher part of the shield; this configuration also requires the #18278 cable.
HygroVue 10 Compatible with the use of the 6637 Hex Adapter Plug.

Additional Compatibility Information

The 41003-5 attaches to a crossarm, mast, or user-supplied pipe with a 1.0 to 2.1 in. OD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Number of FAQs related to 41003-5: 2

  1. To measure ambient temperature and relative humidity (RH), mount the HC2S3-L probe inside a 41003-5 or 41003-5A 10-Plate Radiation Shield. The 27731 hex plug is shipped with the HC2S3-L so that it can be used with older 10-plate radiation shield models. The 6-plate radiation shield (pn 41303-5A) cannot be used with the HC2S3-L.
