The VMT2 is a velocity sensor. It uses the Doppler effect to determine average velocity in open channels or round pipes.
The VMT2 transmits an ultrasound signal into a stream, then averages the return frequency patterns to determine velocity. It can be combined with a level sensor in a culvert or a fixed channel to calculate flow rate (flow Q= area x velocity).
