Best Practices for Long-Term Data Logging in Remote Locations

ConnorFerguson Dec 4, 2025 08:50 AM

Hello everyone,

I’m planning a project where I’ll be deploying a Campbell Scientific data logger in a remote location for an extended period (6–12 months). I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice from experienced users:

  1. Power Management: What’s the best approach to ensure continuous operation? I’m considering solar panels with battery backup but would like to hear recommendations for battery sizing and maintenance.

  2. Data Storage & Retrieval: For sites with limited connectivity, what methods have worked best for long-term data storage? Should I rely solely on SD cards or consider a remote telemetry solution?

  3. Environmental Protection: Any tips for shielding the logger and sensors from extreme temperatures and moisture?

  4. Maintenance Schedule: How often should I plan site visits to ensure everything is functioning properly without disturbing the setup too frequently?

I’m using a CR1000 series logger and plan to monitor temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. Any shared experiences, lessons learned, or resources would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!
