• Data Acquisition Process Overview
• Measurements and the Datalogger Interface – Analog vs. Pulse vs. State vs. Serial
• How the specifications of dataloggers and sensors affect data quality
• Why calibration of dataloggers and sensors are important for data quality
• Telecommunications options for data retrieval

Session 2) 10:00-11:45 Your Web Server or Ours – Taking Data to the Internet (presentation and hands-on)

Overview of Internet data presentation opportunities. Adding graphics to existing web site with RTDM. Creating stand-alone web site with RTMC Web server or Vista Data Vision. Other techniques possible with data files from CSI software. RTDM offers sophisticated graphics and automatically updated image files for incorporation into existing web site designs. RTMC is easy to set up but the web site is limited to what can be included in an RTMC form. Vista Data Vision offers access to long term historical data via stand-alone web server.

Session 3) 1:00 -3:00 New Dataloggers, Same Old Measurements – What really matters hasn’t changed

(120 minutes – 30 mins presentation overview of CRBasic, 30 mins hands-on with Transformer for former Edlog users, 60 mins hands on with Short Cut and CRBasic Editor)

CRBasic is a new programming language for many users, but offers very straightforward programming with a great deal of flexibility to take advantage of the accurate and reliable measurements possible in the datalogger. Users of the traditional Edlog programming language will find that many of the same techniques apply in CRBasic. Programming is more flexible in CRBasic, but you still define variables, establish a scan interval, make measurements, and use output instructions to reduce measurements to samples, averages, standard deviations, or other statistics. Transformer is a software utility that converts Edlog programs for CR10X or CR23X dataloggers to CRBasic programs for CR1000 or CR3000 dataloggers. Short Cut is a program generator that creates a program for you based on simply choosing a datalogger, sensors, and outputs. Starting with a program generated by Short Cut can save you time, ensure that the fundamentals of the measurement are correct, and give you the proper CRBasic program structure.

Session 4) 3:15-4:00 Communications via TCP/IP for Fast, Low-cost Data Collection (45 mins presentation)
Benefits of using TCP/IP over local area networks or the Internet. Serial servers (NL100) make it possible to connect any datalogger to a TCP/IP network. Make multiple stations accessible over the same TCP/IP link by combining TCP/IP serial servers with traditional telephone, RF, or multidrop technologies. Introduce the world of 1xRTT and GPRS digital cell phones and explain how LoggerNet works with these devices.

Session 5) 4:15-5:00 Wireless Options in Data Acquisition and Communications (45 mins presentation)

• Wireless Communications Options – Advantages and disadvantages in communicating with dataloggers via wireless technologies, including licensed frequency radios, spread spectrum radios, digital cell phones (circuit switched and IP).
• On-site Wireless Data Transfer – Communicating with dataloggers in close range without wires using handheld PDAs and low power Bluetooth or infrared interfaces.
• Wireless Sensors – Using dataloggers to provide wireless interfaces to sensors with built-in or standalone spread spectrum radios.

• One-on-one sessions on individual programming questions, measuring special sensors, custom communications needs, designing graphic displays (local PC or Internet), etc.
• Demonstration of advanced software features in LoggerNet Admin, including running as a service, security for distributed client-server applications, techniques for very fast data collection, etc.
• PC to PC data distribution techniques with LoggerNet client-server tools.
• Installing and using the CC640 Digital Camera with datalogger installations.
• Integrating the new GPS16-HVS sensor in datalogger installations for global position and precise clock synchronization.
• What is PakBus and when is it useful in environmental data acquisition?
• Processing–reading and emitting–serial data with the CR1000 and CR3000 dataloggers, over common RS-232 or other protocols.
• Detailed demonstration or hands-on workshop with Vista Data Vision software for exploring historical data, either locally or via the Internet.
• Hands-on training on TCP/IP communications technologies.
