Overview
The SMP10 pyranometer, manufactured by Kipp & Zonen and cabled by Campbell Scientific, measures solar radiation with a high-quality blackened thermopile protected by two glass domes. Its flat spectral sensitivity makes it ideal for applications in natural sunlight, under plant canopies, in greenhouses or buildings, and inverted to measure reflected solar radiation. Communications to on-site RTUs, SCADA systems, or other data acquisition systems are simplified with the industry-standard Modbus RTU communications protocol. Typical uses include environmental monitoring, solar resource assessment, and solar power performance applications.
Typically, this pyranometer is oriented perpendicular to the Earth’s surface to measure global horizontal irradiance (GH). Diffuse sky radiation can also be measured with the use of a shade mechanism.
Key Advantages
Double glass dome
Technical Description
Mounting
The SMP10 should be mounted away from all obstructions and reflective surfaces that might adversely affect the measurement. The pyranometer has a bubble level and two leveling feet, which allow the SMP10 to be leveled without using a leveling base.
The pyranometer typically mounts to a mast, crossarm, or pole (1.0 in. to 2.1 in. OD) via the CM255 or CM255LS mounting stand, assuming the heater/ventilator is not used. The pyranometer mounts near the end cap of an ATI or NexTracker torque tube via the CM260 or CM265 mounting kit, respectively.
The CVF4 Heater/Ventilator attaches to the 31153 Mounting Stand, which mounts to a crossarm or pole via the CM225 Right-Angle Mount or the 17953 Nu-Rail fitting.
Benefits
- Double glass dome
- Wide integration compatibility using Modbus communications
- Integrated bubble level is visible without removing sun shield
- Internal desiccant prevents dew from forming on the inner sides of the domes
- Compatible with the CVF4 heater/ventilator that keeps the domes free from ice and dew

Common Accessories
(6)CVF4
Ventilation Unit for Pyranometers
The CVF4 is a ventilator/heater for the SMP10. The ventilation unit improves the reliability and accuracy of the measurement by reducing dust, raindrops, and dew on the dome. The integrated heater can be used to disperse precipitation and melt frost, or even melt snow and ice in cold climates.
OrderableCM256
Adjustable Plane and Angle Solar Mounting Stand
One stand is needed per pyranometer. The CM256 is one option. The CM256 adjustable-angle, adjustable-plane mounting stand further simplifies the accurate and precise mounting of a pyranometer, ventilation unit, shadowband radiometer, or reference cell. Several pyranometer mounting stands have been combined and simplified to make ordering easier and usability friendlier. The CM256 is a combination of the CM255LS pyranometer mount, CM245 reference cell and shadowband mount, 31394 VU01 mount, and 31153 CVF4 mount. In addition, several new sensors are now fully supported such as the SPN1, MS-80(M), SR30, SR05, and IMT reference cell CM325.
OrderableCM261
Single-Axis Tracker Mounting Stand
One stand is needed per pyranometer. The CM261 is one option. The CM261 single-axis tracker pyranometer mount with adjustable plane simplifies the mounting of any pyranometer, ventilation unit, reference cell, or SPN1 to octagonal, round, and square single-axis torque tubes. The CM261 is a combination and simplification of the CM260 and CM265 to make ordering easier and usability friendlier. The bracket includes provisions for mounting the sensors and ventilation units at different heights, allowing the sensing element to be mounted at the same height as the solar modules.
OrderableCMB200
Crossarm Brace Kit
The CMB200 may be used with a crossarm. This kit provides support for crossarms with heavier or sensitive sensor loads, as well as added stability in higher winds.
Orderable39139
DIN Rail Terminal Kit with 3 Terminals and 8 Wires
The 39139 provides the needed DIN rail terminals, separator, and wires to connect any product to a data logger or other peripheral that requires eight wires for connection. This kit provides the following wires: black, light blue, brown, gray, green, white, yellow, and clear. The color-coding of these wires matches the wire coloring of the product for ease in connection, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Orderable39643
RS-485 DIN Rail Terminal Bus Kit without Mounting Bracket
The 39643 makes it easier for you to connect wires from multiple RS-485 sensors into one set of terminals on a data logger. The 39643 uses six DIN-rail mountable (pn 27479), 6-wire terminal blocks. The 39643 is a jumper that electrically connects two terminal blocks together at a time (pn 32918). This setup allows up to 17 RS-485 sensors to be connected to one set of terminals on a data logger.

Orderable44489
RS485CBL Adapter for SMP10 or SMP12 Used with RS485CBL, ISP10, or SunSentry
The 44489 adapter enables you to integrate a Kipp and Zonen sensor—such as the SMP10 Radiation Sensor with Digital RS-485 Output or SMP12—into a daisy-chain configuration on a SunSentry Solar Operational Meteorological Monitoring Station. The adapter allows the sensor to connect to the SunSentry system using a single trunk-line cable by remapping the pin assignments to match the RS485CBL 24 AWG RS-485 Cable with M12 Five-Pin Connector. The 44489 also routes the cable shield through the connector’s coupling nut, improving surge protection and reducing signal noise for more reliable operation.
OrderableRS485CBL
Five-Conductor Cable with M12 Five-Pin A-Coded Connector
The RS485CBL cable uses a five-conductor shielded cable with an M12 five-pin A-coded connector. The cable has a polyurethane jacket that is UV resistant. The RS485CBL has been custom designed for sensors that use the RS-485 Modbus protocol with integrated power and signal lines. The signal lines have twisted pairs with 24-gauge conductors, and the power lines have a heavier 20-gauge wire, making the cable uniquely suitable for sensors with a higher current draw that have either short or long runs. An aluminum Mylar shield is grounded via a drain wire and connected to the M12 nut.
