Modem setup

Bo Oct 14, 2008 08:22 AM

I am trying to set up communication between a PC with a modem and a CR1000 with a modem.

I cannot establish a connection with the CR1000. It doesn't answer my calls from LoggerNet. I have set the modem to automatically answer any call and that happens but afterwards nothing happens. I have checked the connection between the modems with HyperTerminal.

How should I set up the modem connected to the CR1000? Should I poll the modem to see if there is someone calling? The modem is connected via RS232. Is it possible for LoggerNet to establish a connection via the RS232 port on the CR1000?

This is my equipment:
+ LoggerNet 3.4.1
+ Lasat Safire 560 Voice (modem)
+ CR1000
+ Fargo Maestro 20 (GSM modem)

I hope someone can give me a hint. Thank you.

I looked up a manual for the Fargo Maestro 20 on the WEB. I'm supposing you have the "Y" cable that has a 9-pin serial cable. It's designed to connect to a computers serial port (a DTE device). The CR1000s RS-232 port is also designed to connect to a computers serial port (a DTE device). So basically you need to connect the Fargo Maestro 20 to the RS-232 port of the CR1000 so you're connecting two DCE devices together. That will require a NULL modem adapter (not just a gender changer) between the 9-pin on the "Y" cable and the RS-232 port of the CR1000.

It also looks like the RS-232 port of the Fargo Maestro 20 communicates at 9600 baud. I would set the baud rate of the RS-232 port of the CR1000 to "9600 Fixed" using the Device Configuration Utility.

Do you already have things set up as I've described?

Yes, I have the Y-cable and a null modem adapter and I've set the baud rate to 9600. And still LoggerNet cannot connect via the modems.

But it seems like it is not possible to connect via RS232 on the CR1000 and e.g. upload a new program from the PC, is that true? Do I need a RS232 to CS I/O converter? I need to be able to upload a new program to the CR1000 and download data from it, both via calls from the PC (LoggerNet).

No matter what. How should I set up the GSM modem is there some restrictions? (PIN, auto answer, error settings...)

I have connected the GSM modem to the CS I/O via a PDA-to-CS I/O converter and a null modem (because the PDA acts as a DTE-device but the GSM modem acts as a DCE-device). And still nothing happens when I try to connect.

There is an other issue. There are different kinds of RS232 null modems. The one I got is a Null modem with full handshaking. Apart from that I have found 3 other kinds:

+ Without handshaking
+ Loop back handshaking
+ Partial handshaking

Which should I use in the two cases I have described?

Try turning off hardware flow control in the Fargo Maestro 20 modem.

Bo Oct 20, 2008 08:10 AM

I have already turned off flow control. AT+IFC = 0,0

But what about all my questions? If you could answer some of them I might have a better chance finding the problem.

...it seems like it is not possible to connect via RS232 on the CR1000 and e.g. upload a new program from the PC, is that true?

Do I need a RS232 to CS I/O converter?

How should I set up the GSM modem is there some restrictions besides flow control? (PIN, auto answer, error settings...)

How can the modem interrupt the CR1000 and upload and request data and programs?

Which null modem should I use?

It's really urgent that I can get this to work within a short period of time. I hope you don't take my tone too personally.

Thank you Glen.

Regards.

The Fargo units are essentially repackaged Wavecom modules, sometimes loaded with some extra custom firmware although by default this is not active. So for a start you might be best off working from one of our manuals for the Wavecom terminal:

ftp://ftp.campbellsci.com/pub/csl/outgoing/uk/manuals/cs_gsm_jul08.pdf

In that manual it describes setup and connection to the RS232 port where you can do everything that you can do via the CS I/O port, albeit sometimes with slightly higher power consumption.

Instructions for making our cable are:

Solder wires to 15 way D plug as below.

Red ---- 2
Blue ---- 6
Yellow ---- 8
Green ---- 9
Screen ---- Shell

I know one of our distributors has used one model of the Fargo modems with older generation loggers with success. With that older logger they did fix the serial port speed in the logger as sometimes it tried to lock onto the wrong speed when the modem was negotiating a call. I am not sure if that is necessary with a CR1000 - I doubt it.

If that does not work it will probably be quicker and cheaper to buy the complete configured package from a CS distributor.

...it seems like it is not possible to connect via RS232 on the CR1000 and e.g. upload a new program from the PC, is that true?

Not at all. A regular serial cable (no converter and no NULL modem) is all that's required from the computer to the RS232 port of the CR1000. If you have fixed the CR1000s RS232 baud rate to 9600 then you need to make sure the maximum baud rate on the PakBus port in your LoggerNet setup is not less then that.

CR1000 > PDA to CS I/O Adapter > NULL Modem Cable > Computer

will also work to communicate with the CR1000 directly from the computer.

I recommend you continue attaching the modem to the RS232 port of the CR1000, which is the simplest configuration, and not attempt to attach the modem to the CS I/O port of the CR1000 using the adapter and NULL modem cable.

How should I set up the GSM modem is there some restrictions besides flow control? (PIN, auto answer, error settings...)

Auto-answer should be on (ATS1), hardware flow control should be off(AT+IFC=0,0), and DTR should be ignored (AT&D0). We do not sell and therefore have no hands-on experience with the specific GSM modem you are using so I have no further advice for you regarding modem configuration.

How can the modem interrupt the CR1000 and upload and request data and programs?

The CR1000 will simply wake up when it starts receiving characters on its RS232 line and a connection to the modem should be established. Once that's done you should have all of the communications options (e.g. collect data, send programs, etc) that LoggerNet provides available to you.

Which null modem should I use?

The NULL modem cables we supply are built for full handshaking so the one you have (full handshaking) is fine.

You said you configured the CR1000 for 9600 baud on the RS232 port. Did you do that with DevConfig, and if so, which port (RS232 or CS I/O) were you connected to?

If time is indeed of the essence for your project, this forum is a slow route to the solution. Calling Campbell Scientific and interacting with an Applications Engineer will result in a solution much faster.

Dear All

I have a same problem. I cant configure Modem Fastrack XT

I used RS232 interface and connect to modem

then load Dev.conf. v2.13

try to establesh connection (br is 9600)

and write AT respose must be ok on terminal windws

but i got respose üpüpüpüüüp İt is not claer to me

need help

novicok Nov 13, 2016 05:09 PM

dear all,

today I would like to use GPRS system of the Solar Monitoring Station.

CR1000 data logger

sc105 interface

fastract xtend FX0009

I configurated modem+sc105+ CR1000

the data logger now can see static IP address of the provider

I used Main- setup- setup screen configurated Com port4_2(Com port4_2+Pak Busport+CR1000) and IP port(IP port +Pak Bus port_2 + CR1000_2)

I checked on the status monitor but there is not communication.

some error i see.

IP port critical connection or something like this

what I need to do next.

best regards

Rasim
