Omnidirectional antennas pick up signals from all directions (i.e., it doesn't have to be pointed directly at the source of the signal to pick it up). This type of antenna is used when the specific direction of the signal is not known, when one antenna is receiving and transmitting in several directions, or for mobile applications.
