FAQ

Q. What new features did you add to the RF401?
The functions of the RF401 and RF400 are essentially the same when you use the transparent protocol with array-based datalogger operating systems. The biggest change is the addition of two new protocol options in the RF401: "PB Aware" and "PB Node". "PB Aware" and "PB Node" make the radio easier to use in a PakBus network.

Q. What is the typical range for the 922 and 2400 RF devices?

The RF411 is a 100 mW, 920-928 MHz radio, it has a true line of sight. In a dry environment, with absolutely no physical obstruction to impair the line-of-sight path, and with the proper antennas, you can expect 10+ miles. With the RF416 50 mW, 2.4 GHz radio, under the same conditions, you can expect  5+ miles.

Q. I am using RF401 with the CR10x datalogger to communicate with the RF401 on the computer side. Can I use four different dataloggers with RF401 on the computer side, thus taking data from four different dataloggers , and plotting at the same time?
Yes. The best configuration is if the CR10x was using the PakBus operating system.

Q. Can I put together a SCADA system using the CR10X, Loggernet software, and RF401 radios?
Yes. The Loggernet software provides RTMC, a HMI software. The CR10X can be provided with a ModBus Communications protocol or PakBus. Both will work very well and are commonly used in SCADA systems. With the MODBUS, the CR10X can interface with existing software, and/or existing PLC's.

Q. I have a DOS application requiring bidirectional serial wireless comm to a nonintelligent data terminal. Will a pair of RF401s work?

There is a good chance that they would. However, the RF401s have been designed to work with Campbell Scientific dataloggers. There are more generic spread-spectrum radios (off the shelf) that are designed to work in the configuration you described.

Q. Can I use the RF401 in my RF400 network?
Yes, the RF401 will work in your RF400 network. When the RF401 leaves our factory, its protocol is set to "transparent", which will communicate with the RF400s. However, if you have RF400s that are set to addresses of 28, 44, 52, 56, or 60, they must be changed when the RF401s are added to the network.
