Overview
The TempVue™20 provides even greater flexibility to customers wanting the next generation of air-temperature measurements. This sensor meets all relevant World Meteorological Organization (WMO) temperature recommendations, but with a digital output that ensures maximum flexibility to meet all application needs.
Designed with the customer in mind, the TempVue 20 easily interfaces with Campbell Scientific or third-party data loggers and fits a wide range of aspirated and passive temperature shields. The sensor comes with a short cable attached and terminates into an M12 connector, providing exceptional convenience, environmental protection, and data integrity for use in a variety of applications.
This featured product was part of the Aconcagua expedition to install a weather station on South America’s tallest peak. Learn more about the expedition on our Extreme Application Series: Aconcagua page.
Key Advantages
Digital ambient air-temperature sensor
Technical Description
The TempVue 20 consists of a wire-wrapped, four-wire Pt100 Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) element encapsulated in an epoxy-filled, stainless-steel housing. The thin yet robust housing, combined with the Pt100 sensing element, result in a sensor that meets the WMO guideline for step response time (20 seconds) with an ambient wind speed of only 1 m/s (3.3 ft/s). The digital TempVue 20 also gives users much more measurement confidence than an analog sensor is able to provide, such as status information and the removal of any hassles regarding calibration inputs.
The TempVue 20 has a maximum measurement uncertainty of only 0.3 Kelvin over the entire measurement range of -60° to +60°C, with only 0.1 Kelvin over the most common temperature range of -40° to +40°C.
Benefits
- Status information, measurement averaging options, and calibration information onboard
- Meets all relevant temperature WMO recommendations
- High measurement stability over both time and temperature
- Incredibly easy to install or remove for calibration checks
- Durable and protected for even the harshest environmental conditions
- Calibration certificate included

Common Accessories
(5)TS100SS
Aspirated Radiation Shield
The TS100SS is a fan-aspirated radiation shield that minimizes temperature-measurement errors caused by incident solar radiation. The unique aerodynamic shape and rugged, low-power fan make it the first research-grade fan-aspirated shield that is practical for use on battery- or solar-powered stations. The shield provides excellent sensor protection and accommodates various combinations of thermistors, PRTs, and humidity sensors using one of the sensor port adapter plugs.
OrderableRAD06
6-Plate Solar Radiation Shield
The RAD06 uses a double-louvered design that offers improved sensor protection from driving rain, snow, and insect intrusion. It also has lower self-heating in bright sunlight combined with higher temperatures (> 24°C (~75°F)) and low wind speeds (< 2m/s (~4.5 mph)), providing a better measurement.
OrderableRAD10E
10-Plate Solar Radiation Shield for Larger Sensors
The RAD10E, manufactured by MetSpec, is attached to a Campbell Scientific crossarm or mast. The RAD10E uses a double-louvered design that offers improved sensor protection from driving rain, snow, and insect intrusion. This shield also has lower self-heating in bright sunlight combined with higher temperatures (> 24°C (~75°F)) and low wind speeds (< 2 m s-1 (~4.5 mph)), giving a better measurement.
Orderable41003-5
10-Plate Solar Radiation Shield
The 41003-5 is a naturally aspirated 10-plate radiation shield. Its louvered construction allows air to pass freely through the shield, keeping the probe at or near ambient temperature. The shield's white color reflects solar radiation.
OrderableCABLE8PIN-LITE
22 AWG Three-Conductor Cable with One Eight-Pin Connector
This replacement cable is typically used with an SDI-12 sensor that has an M12, eight-pin plug connector, such as the Wintersense SDI-12, to connect it to a data logger with wiring terminals. The CABLE8PIN-LITE has an M12 socket connector on one end and terminates with ferruled wires.

- TempVue 20 Program Examplesv1
October 19, 2023
Software ApplicationsThree example programs are available for the TempVue 20. The SDI-12 program uses the R0! SDI-12 instruction to retrieve the temperature measurement. A basic Modbus program retrieves both the Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature measurements from the TempVue 20. The advanced Modbus program retrieves the instantaneous measurements, averages, minimums, maximums, measurement period, red flags, serial number, operating system version, and model ID. These programs are written for the CR1000X data logger, but programs for the other data loggers will be similar.
