Case Study »  Stump Cross Caverns: Stalagmite Monitoring

Project Summary

Application Type:
Determining the relationships between stalagmite growth and climate change

Location:
Yorkshire, England

Products Used:
CR10X

Contracting Agencies:
University of Exeter

Controlled Equipment:
Samplers

Scientists from the University of Exeter are using a CR10X measurement and control system to measure the growth of 10,000 year old stalagmites to show how they can help predict changes in the climate. The datalogger acquires the stalagmite growth data via six automatic samplers and over 2 km of cable at Stump Cross Caverns near Harrogate in Yorkshire, UK. Stalagmites contain clues about how the climate has changed over thousands of years and may help predict how it will change in the future.
