Application Type: Monitoring household power use, building conditions, and meteorological conditions in support of an energy-efficient housing project Location: Dade County Florida, USA Contributors: Danny S. Parker and John R. Sherwin, Florida Solar Energy Center, Cocoa, Florida Contracting Agencies: Florida Solar Energy Center Measured Parameters: Household power use; meteorological conditions, including air temperature, solar radiation, RH, wind speed, ground and water temperature; building conditions |
Twenty houses in Dade County, Florida were instrumented with dataloggers and sensors by the Florida Solar Energy Center to research energy-efficient housing. Ten of the houses served as a control group. The other 10 had energy-efficient features built into them. Monitored parameters included household power use (total and individual appliance), meteorological conditions, and the houses’ condition (e.g., roof and interior air temperature). Data from the two groups were compared to determine the performance of the energy-efficiency measures and identify possible improvements.
