FAQ

Q. I would like to know if we can use the USB-to-9-Pin Male RS232 Cable (Part 17394) between a laptop and a CR10 datalogger, which has a storage module (SM 192).
This cable will work with the addition of an SC32B (17229) to communicate with a CR10. A storage module connected to the CS I/O port with a SC32B will only be effected while there is communication via the SC32B. Once communication via the SC32B is finished the datalogger will be able to communicate with the storage module. Any data to be sent to the storage module will be held by the datalogger until SC32B communication is finished.

Q. Could you please tell me what the pin connection is between USB and DB9 (RS232) connectors?
A USB-to-serial cable has electronic components in it to interface the USB to RS-232. There is no pin correlation between USB and DB9.

Q. Can an NL100 be set up through DevConfig using a 17394 cable instead of an RS-232 null-modem cable? Would a 17394 connected to the SC32B be basically the same as an SC-USB?
An NL100 requires the use of a null-modem cable for configuration. If a computer does not have an RS-232 port to connect the null modem to, a USB-to-serial cable (17394) can be used with the null modem cable to configure the NL100.

The combination of the USB to serial (17394) and the SC32B (17229) is basically the same as the SC-USB (17418). Both options will enable communication between a computer and a datalogger with a CS I/O port.

Q. I recently bought a laptop to replace an older laptop we used to communicate with four 21X Microloggers®. I discovered the new laptop did not have an RS-232 DB-9 port, but it does have two USB ports. I understand that the CS I/O port on the 21X is not standard RS-232 protocol. Will the 17394 cable work with the 21X or do you have another cable that will? Or do I need to do something else?
Part number 17394 is a USB-to-9-pin-serial cable. This cable will work with the addition of an SC32B (17229) to communicate with any Campbell Scientific datalogger with a CS I/O port. The 17394 will also work as a standalone cable for dataloggers that have an RS-232 port on them (e.g., CR800, CR1000).
